EnviroMentors Join Close the Gap Day Celebrations
Last week the EnviroMentors took part in a Close the Gap event – a national campaign aimed at achieving health equality between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Aboriginal Australians.
Up to 500 students and members of the Aboriginal community marked Birpai Aboriginal Land Council Close the Gap Day event in Port Macquarie, last Friday 21st March. Our Education and Programs Development Officer and Port Macquarie local, Jacqui, represented KNSWB.
Organised by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in conjunction with the Birpai Land Council as well as local community services and health providers, Friday’s event was aimed primarily at local high school and primary school students as well as members of the Aboriginal community.
Friday also marked the official opening of the new outdoor kitchen and community garden at the Birpai Aboriginal Land Council. Students celebrated by learning about looking health and environment through catchment discovery, worm-farming demonstration and planting vegetables and herbs in the new Birpai community garden.
It was a fantastic event with a lot of positive energy and celebration of culture.
