Make your own household cleaners!

We’re big fans of sustainable living in all aspects of our lives. Here are some quick ways you can go green and keep your house clean… just by being a little bit handy. (It’ll save you money, too).

 Carpet Stain Remover

Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray directly on stain, let sit for several minutes, and clean with a brush or sponge using warm soapy water.

For a heavy duty carpet cleaner, mix 1/4 cup each of salt, borax and vinegar. Rub paste into carpet and leave for a few hours. Vacuum. (via)

Air Freshener

You’ll need:

Several orange peels
2 cinnamon sticks
Several cloves
Pot of water

To get rid of tough kitchen odors, bring the pot of water to a boil with the orange peels, cloves, and cinnamon sticks, and leave it simmering on the stove for a while. (via)

Toilet Cleaner

Pour ½ cup of baking soda and about 10 drops of tea tree essential oil into the toilet. Add ¼ cup of vinegar to the bowl and scrub away while the mixture fizzes. (via)

Laundry Detergent

You’ll need:

1 bar shaved bar soap
1 cup borax
1 cup washing soda (or 2 cups, if you don’t want to use borax)

Thoroughly stir together for several minutes and enjoy the results! You can take this a step further and blend the mixture in a blender or food processor to create a powder that will dissolve easily even in cold water. (Just be sure to let the dust settle before removing the lid of your blender or food processor so you don’t inhale the fine particles.) Store in a sealed container with a small scoop. (via)

Grease Remover

One part vinegar to two parts of water if you’d prefer to use vinegar diluted – though you can use it undiluted. You can even add a few drops of a fragrant oil or lemon juice to it if you want to have a better scent. (via)
