Three Times a Winner: Manly Cleans Up At National Sustainable Cities Awards
Manly Council was crowned with the Community Action and Partnerships award, at the Keep Australia Beautiful National Australian Sustainable Cities Awards 2014.
The event was held in the City of Marion, in Adelaide, on Friday 28 November, and the Overall Australian Sustainable City for 2014 went to Queensland’s entry from Brisbane City Council.
Manly’s outstanding conservation and sustainability-related partnership programs were recognised in their winning title. They also won two highly commended awards, in the Dame Phyllis Frost Litter Prevention Award and the Environmental Protection and Innovation Award.
“The sophistication of these programs is due in no small part to the participation and leadership contributed by the Manly Environmental Centre and other excellent professional staff of the Council,” said Australian Sustainable Cities judge Cameron Little.
Manly is presented with the not uncommon problem for Cities that are blessed with natural features like beaches of outstanding beauty. Many people use the area recreationally, and apply significant pressure to the natural levels of litter.
“Manly Council has had to develop very effective methods and programs to prevent and respond to any litter that does arrive in its streets, its open malls and upon its beaches and other natural areas,” Mr Little Said.
The highlights of Manly’s entry were the Fairy Penguin protection program, the sea horse protection program, the restoration and enhancement of Cabbage Tree Bay and the impressive partnering with community volunteers and groups like Eco Divers to protect Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve with its climate change and sea level rise research.
“They are excellent projects that deliver solid results to their community,” said Mr Little.
Peter McLean, National Executive Officer for Keep Australia Beautiful said, “each finalist has demonstrated significant outcomes in a range of sustainability projects and activities and the National program allows each of them to learn even more from leading projects in other States.”
The Sustainable Cities program allows Australia to show case the best of the best, and provides outstanding examples of how cities around the nation are implementing practical projects that help local communities achieve an efficient and sustainable future.
